Communities around the
region burst at the seams with Umatilla at the center of growth. Workers
rushed from all over the U.S. into eastern Oregon to take advantage
of jobs building nearby Hanford Nuclear Reservation, the Umatilla
Army Depot, dams, bridges, homes. schools, and hospitals. The population
rose from26,030 in the county to 41,703 between 1940 and 1950.
