Center
for Columbia River History Director,
Portland State University
I moved back to Portland, Oregon (the city I grew up in) to join the
Center for Columbia River History as a fellow in January 1999, after
spending nearly seven years in Eastern Washington. I earned both a M.A.
and a Ph.D. (completed in May, 1999) at Washington State University in
Pullman.
I recently completed Death of Celilo Falls.
This book examines the negotiations and controversies that took place
during the planning and construction of The Dalles dam and the profound
impact the project had on both the Indian community of Celilo Village
and the non-Indian town of The Dalles. I teach Oregon history, history
of the Pacific Northwest, and public history courses at Portland State
University.
My work with the Center has had a profound, positive impact in how I
perform my academic work, my approach to teaching, and my desire to be
of service to a broad public citizenry. The Center continues to enrich
the region through its public programs, teacher workshops, and the
opportunities it provides students and scholars of the region's history,
and I am pleased to be a part of its mission.
