National History Day is a highly regarded and academically challenging non-profit program for students in grades 6-12. The program's goal is to promote the study of history by engaging students and teachers in the excitement of historical inquiry and creative presentation.

This yearlong educational program fosters academic achievement and intellectual growth. Students are encouraged to choose any topic in local, national or world history and investigate its historical significance and relationship to an annual theme by conducting extensive primary and secondary research. After analyzing and interpreting their information, students present their findings in papers, exhibits, performances and media presentations that are evaluated by historians and educators. Since students can choose the type of project they will do, they have the opportunity to present their findings in ways that display their individual talents. Above all else, students find that learning and history can be fun!

CCRH staff participate as judges at regional and state level History Day competitions. In addition, CCRH has marked its commitment to History Day by establishing the Castles Award in Columbia River Basin History at the Washington State History Day Competition.
