In November 2001 CCRH announced the recipients
of the 2001 James B. Castles Heritage Award: Oregon Department
of Transportation (ODOT) employees Jeanette B. Kloos
and Robert W. Hadlow, Ph.D. CCRH presented the award
at the Hal Holmes Center in Ellensburg, Washington on November
17, prior to the public program entitled Lewis and Clark:
New Perspectives on a Historic Journey.
The James B. Castles Heritage Award honors
individuals or organizations who have made significant contributions
to foster a deeper understanding of Columbia River Basin
history through education of the general public, preservation
of heritage materials, or contribution to community life
through cultural interpretation or social service.
Robert Hadlow and Jeanette Kloos have played
a major role in the restoration and interpretation of the
Historic Columbia River Highway -- the first National Historical
Landmark-designated state highway in America. Kloos, Scenic
Area Coordinator for ODOT, is the author of the Historic
Columbia River Highway Master Plan, and has served as project
manager for several projects to restore and reconnect abandoned
portions of the Highway as a multi-use trail. Hadlow developed
a traveling exhibit and lecture series about the Highway
that was hosted at venues such as Maryhill Museum and the
Oregon State Archives, and researched and wrote the successful
National Historic Landmark nomination.
The Center for Columbia River History offers
the annual Castles Heritage Award as a memorial to James
B. Castles, who throughout his life enthusiastically supported
public participation in regional history. The award is made
possible by a generous endowment from the M.J. Murdock Charitable
Trust and carries a $1,000 honorarium. Nominations are open
to any individual or non-profit organization in the Columbia
River Basin. Hadlow and Kloos will donate their honorarium
to the nonprofit Oregon State Parks Trust Fund.
Previous Castles Heritage Award winners are
Ted Strong, former Director of the Columbia River
Inter-tribal Fish Commission; William Layman, local
historian in Wenatchee; Irene Martin, local historian
in Skamakowa; the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute;
and the writing team of Dr. Robert Ruby and John Brown.
